Samsung Focus S, Focus Flash reach AT&T Nov. 6 in second try

updated 03:20 pm EDT, Fri October 28, 2011

ATT prices and dates first Windows Phones

AT&T on Friday posted launch details for its first two Windows Phone 7.5 devices. Both the Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash will arrive in the carrier's stores on November 6, just a day ahead of a New York City event. The phones will try to cover the full spread of smartphones from the start, beginning at $50 on a contract with the entry Focus Flash and moving up to $200 for the higher-end Focus S.

The Focus S is a direct Windows Phone parallel to the Galaxy S II and shares the same 4.3-inch, 480x800 Super AMOLED Plus screen as its Android counterpart. Microsoft's chassis specs limit it to a single-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon, although the lighter OS helps offset the impact. An eight-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera put it close to the S II in imaging.

The Focus Flash is a direct port of the Omnia W and mostly trades down in the screen and rear camera, dipping to a 3.7-inch older Super AMOLED and a five-megapixel sensor.

No mention has been made of when the HTC Titan arrives.

AT&T's launch is a test of whether or not the OS update and more aggressive hardware can improve Windows Phone sales. Microsoft has declined to give shipment numbers for much of 2011 and has had to admit that it wasn't meeting targets. When the original WP7 platform arrived at AT&T last year, devices were all priced closer to the $200 mark but had to be quickly discounted and thrown into giveaway promotions after most customers skipped them for iPhones and AT&T's early Android phones.
