Logitech Revue pops up promising 'improved' Google TV, apps

Logitech Revue box hints Google TV revival soon

An unnamed electronics store has obtained updated Logitech Revue boxes hinting that the Google TV revamp is underway. The sighting by someone visiting an electronics retailer showed Engadget a new box touting Google TV, but "now with Android 3.1 and Android Market." None of the boxes have been opened yet to see if it has the new Google TV interface already installed or if it will need to get a post-sale update.

The revision is poised to be a major improvement on the original. Its core addition is the support for third-party apps, which will let it get much more content than the limited selection today. Moving to the newer version of Android also gives it support for home screen widgets, dedicated media browsing sections, and a new search engine that finds content in third-party apps, not just on the web or traditional TV.

A full-fledged Revue sequel is presumed to be coming, but whether that's the device in the box or a future model isn't apparent. If just an upgraded version of the original, it would hint at Logitech preferring to keep its $99 price to drive sales. Google TV so far has been a failure in the market and led to the ousting of Logitech's CEO along with cutting the Revue's price in half beyond existing drops.

Google hasn't signaled any special events, nor have Logitech, Sony, or new partners Samsung and Vizio revealed any intention to have an event. An appearance without fanfare late in the year could point either to most waiting for the CES expo in January or else having quiet launches. Vizio already outlined Google TV plans, although the models have yet to ship.
