Kobo to offer its own publishing service

Company to help with editing and design

Kobo has announced plans to launch its own publishing service to complement its e-book distribution business. The company is said to be readying a range of publishing services, working directly with authors to edit content and establish book designs.

"It's part of the new market and if you expect to be a number 1 player in that market globally it's table stakes -- you have to provide it," Kobo CEO Michael Serbinis told CBC News.

The Canadian company appears to be following Amazon's strategy, as both e-book distributors will be competing directly with established publishing firms. Like Amazon, Kobo is expected to offer authors a larger cut of profits than traditional publishers would be able to provide.

Kobo will formally debut its publishing services sometime next year.
