Apple issues iPhoto update, fixes 3ivx conflict

updated 05:55 pm EDT, Wed October 26, 2011

Video codec caused crashes in Lion

Apple today updated iPhoto '11 to v9.2.1, a bugfix update the corrects a crashing and importing issue that appeared whenever there was an old 3ivx codec present when users upgraded iPhoto to v9.2. The update, which is only available via Software Update at present, fixes the issue without requiring users to remove the 3ivx codec, which resolved the issue for users prior to the update. The codec was most commonly installed on Mac systems via the Flip digital video recorder.

The problem codec is usually installed in the main Library folder, inside the Application Support folder. Users who manually removed the codec but still need the support for Flip cameras can reinstall the codec once iPhoto has been upgraded to v9.2.1. The update size varies depending on system, but on a MacNN test machine was 260MB (running iPhoto 9.2 under OS X 10.7.2). A direct download link to the update will be provided when available.
