Tango app to beat Skype to Windows Phone video

Tango said Wednesday that its Windows Phone app would go live November 7. The release is timed to have the app ready in time for the first US Windows Phones, which should include the Focus S, Focus Flash, and Titan on AT&T. HTC and others should have Tango already installed given its existence on the Radar and Titan.

The basic app will stay free, although Tango plans a premium version with extra features.

The release was directly coordinated with Microsoft and saw not only help getting the app working but Tango provide feedback on Windows Phone 7.5. It comes as a surprise from Microsoft, which unveiled plans to buy Skype earlier in the year and closed the deal just under two weeks ago. Microsoft has argued that it wants a non-exclusive ecosystem and has even used Tango in official demos of what's possible with the Windows Phone 7.5 update.

Regardless, Tango getting in early is a symbolic problem for Microsoft, which alluded to Skype reaching Windows Phone this fall but now is unlikely to see it until 2012. An upshot may come from the wait as Microsoft looks to integrate Skype directly into the OS itself and create an alternative to Apple's FaceTime or Google Talk on Android. [via Forbes]
