iPad 3's 2048x1536 display rumored in production in November

iPad 3 display may be both dense and bright

The iPad 3's repeatedly rumored 2048x1536 display may be starting production soon but also pose a challenge. A rumor late Wednesday had production underway as soon as November at previously mentioned LG and Samsung plants. The CNET tip warned, however, that it was a "quantum leap" in density at tablet size and that yields of working displays could be an issue.

Apple would purportedly have a 1600x1200 resolution as a fallback.

In spite of the increased pixel density, it could be an unusually bright display. At 550 nits of brightness, it would be brighter than the typical 350-nit notebook screen and compete well with most smartphone displays. It's not apparent whether there would be a change from the current IPS panel to a technique like LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) or a Super PLS-based IPS screen, although Samsung isn't likely to want to share PLS.

Apple has at least dropped hints that it's planning on a 2048x1536 display with art assets at the needed resolutions creeping into iOS 5. Other companies have also given more public signs that such pixel densities are planned: Samsung is developing a 2560x1600 tablet panel, and Toshiba is planning an even denser 6.1-inch equivalent. Samsung's example was shown at the FPD conference this week with line artifacts, however, suggesting that it too was having some early teething problems getting reliable output.

A successful display upgrade would be a help for Apple's ambitions of cornering digital magazines. With Newsstand taking off, achieving a more print-like level of detail could help persuade print readers to use iPad editions instead.
