Gazelle reports record BlackBerry trade-ins

updated 09:50 pm EDT, Tue October 25, 2011

Influx of BlackBerries follows e-mail problems

Used electronics buyer Gazelle has reported a significant uptick in BlackBerry trade-ins, as a large number of owners have recently decided to swap their RIM handsets for cash. The recycler noted an 80 percent increase in BlackBerry trades from last week, well beyond record numbers that were established just last month.

Although Gazelle does not press sellers for details regarding their decision to get rid of a product, the spike in BlackBerry trade-ins coincides with widespread BlackBerry service outages. The reliability of RIM's platform was believed to be one of the most important factors helping the company retain customers, however the outages left many handsets crippled for up to four days.

Aside from problems with RIM's own services, the trade-in timing also follows the iPhone 4S launch. Exact numbers surrounding BlackBerry defectors remains unclear, though Apple's latest smartphone is said to have reached at least four million sales across the globe.

"In the grand scheme of BlackBerry growth over the past month, it can be pretty much entirely attributed to the launch of the iPhone 4S," Gazelle's "Chief Gadget Officer," Anthony Scarsella, told CNET.

    Kind of sad

It's kind of sad to be watching the fall of a once great company... I guess it's bound to happen to all companies, as chances are they will all fall out of favor with the public.. but to watch a kind of slow motion train wreck like this is .. well.. kind of sad.

It would be cool if they were able to come back and offer a real alternative to the iOS, WP and Android platforms - competition is always best for consumers - but looking at the news reports and what's going on inside RIM makes me think that it is just not going to happen.
