Motorola promises Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades in six weeks

updated 06:55 pm EDT, Mon October 24, 2011

Actual release timing remains unclear

Just one week after Motorola's Droid Razr was upstaged by Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, the former company has promised to offer Ice Cream Sandwich updates for many of its latest Android phones. Although vague promises for Android updates are commonplace in the industry, Motorola has made a surprising commitment to provide the upgrades within six weeks after Google releases its final version.

"We'll be releasing devices for [Ice Cream Sandwich] 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it," Motorola announced in a Twitter post.

The company recently confirmed that its Droid Razr would be one of its first devices to receive Android 4.0, however the Droid Bionic and Motorola Xoom have been added to the list. Ice Cream Sandwich was viewed as one of the primary features that may give the Galaxy Nexus an edge in the market, despite the new Razr's unique hardware.

Despite the six-week promise, it remains unclear if the company's developers will be able to adapt the OS and add custom UI overlays for each device within the short time. Public availability will also rely on carriers for most users, adding another potential source for delays. [via Android and Me]
