Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus hits US for $399 on Nov. 13

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus to undercut on price

Samsung brought one of its more important tablets to the US Friday with plans to sell the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus in the US. The seven-inch tablet should reach the country on November 13 with pre-orders at Amazon, Best Buy, and elsewhere starting October 23. Versions will start at $399 for 16GB of space with Wi-Fi only and bump up to $499 for a 32GB model, albeit only in early 2012.

Both American models will come preloaded with Peel for Android to help users pick shows while in front of the TV. Its version promises to be improved over the stock version on both Android and iOS, Samsung said: the new version lets users control the TV and other home theater hardware over the local network, not just browse the guide or talk to Peel's hardware adapter.

Outside of capacity, the two tablets run Android 3.2 with Samsung's latest TouchWiz interface. A 1.2GHz dual-core processor makes it much faster than the 2010 original, although it still has a three-megapixel rear camera along with a two-megapixel front camera.

The move is possibly audacious for Samsung, which is facing a negative perception in the court over alleged similarities between its Android devices and iOS hardware. Regardless, it shows a turnaround from the mistakes made with the original Galaxy Tab launch, when it assumed it could repeat the carrier model in tablets and forced customers to buy an expensive 3G version that fared poorly against the iPad. Releasing the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus in a Wi-Fi edition first both creates a clear price gap and increases its exposure beyond just carrier stores.

I'm willing to bet that Apple

will be able to sell a standard size 32 GB iPad 2 for $499 by next year. I'm not sure at what price the iPad 3 is going to sell for, though. I doubt that Apple will offer a 16 GB model if it has some super-hi-res display. I think that 7" Galaxy Tab 7.0 sales will be hindered by the Amazon Fire selling for $299.
