HTC makes first CDMA-GSM dual mode Evo phone

Sprint Wednesday brought out a new budget Evo that's its first dual-mode model in the line. The HTC Evo Design 4G is a close cousin of the Hero S that can roam on GSM networks along with Sprint's native CDMA. Its version adds WiMAX to get the claimed 4G speeds.

Both models share a four-inch, 540x960 display as well as a 1.2GHz, single-core Snapdragon, a five-megapixel back camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. It ships with Android 2.3 and Sense 3.0, and along with a handful of carrier apps can work as a hotspot for up to eight devices.

Price is key to the Evo Design 4G, which will cost as much as an 8GB iPhone 4 at $100 on a contract. Stores should have it as of October 23.
