Alleged LulzSec hacker pleads not guilty in Sony case

updated 06:30 am EDT, Tue October 18, 2011

Alleged hacker could face 15 years in prison

An alleged LulzSec hacker has pleaded not guilty to charges that he took part in a Sony network intrusion. Reuters reports that Cody Kretsinger, 23, has entered not guilty pleas to one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer at a hearing in the US District Court in Los Angeles. Judge Victor Kenton set a December 13 trial date for Kretsinger, who also ordered that Kretsinger be defended by a court-appointed public defender.

Specifically, the nine-page indictment accuses Kretsinger of launching an SQL Injection attack on the Sony Pictures computer systems. Using the pseudonym Recursion, Krestinger is alleged to have posted the stolen information which included one million user passwords on the LulzSec website and announcing the hack on the underground group's Twitter account.

LulzSec had also stolen the personal information of 77 million PlayStation Network users in one of the largest online hacks in history. The attack was in retaliation to action Sony had taken against users hacking into PlayStation 3 consoles.

"From a single injection we accessed EVERYTHING," the hacking group said in a statement at the time. "Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks."

If convicted, Kretsinger faces a maximum term of 15 years in prison.
