Apple stores may close an hour on October 19 to honor Jobs

Apple may let retail staff join in Jobs tribute

A rumor Saturday hinted that Apple might let retail staff join in on its corporate Steve Jobs memorial event on October 19. The 9to5 tip would have stores closing for an hour that day starting at 1PM Eastern. Staff would be free to watch a live broadcast from the company's Cupertino headquarters before returning to work.

Though unconfirmed, the plan aligns with CEO Tim Cook's comments about "arrangements for employees outside of Cupertino" in the e-mail for the gathering. A 1PM start time also aligns with Apple's usual preference for special events.

Although Jobs' passing will have taken place two weeks earlier, the upcoming week will represent Apple's more official tribute to its co-founder. Along with the mid-week occasion, a private memorial is due on October 16, which state governor Jerry Brown has labeled as Steve Jobs Day.
