Barnes & Noble takes over Borders' sites, sows confusion

updated 09:40 pm EDT, Fri October 14, 2011

Borders web visitors redericted to Barnes & Noble

Those who attempt to visit on Friday will be redirected to a special Barnes & Noble's web page. The Borders Twitter and Facebook accounts were also seemingly taken over. Visitors are greeted by a message from B&N CEO William Lynch, asking that they give B&N a chance to be their bookstore. The Facebook page apologizes for Borders' closing and invites visitors to join the B&N Facebook page.

Visitors are confused by the notes, as Barnes & Noble hasn't done a very good job of informing them that it bought Borders' intellectual property, including website and customer list. Those who wish not to have their data transferred to Barnes & Noble can do so here before October 29.

The redirect site also offers users a coupon for 10 percent off any item and a free two-month Barnes & Noble membership, though it has some limitations associated with it. The membership includes free express shipping and in-store discounts. The regular, $25 per year membership adds $25 off the Nook Color and other coupons and special offers. [via MocoNews]
