Ericsson finds mobile data use doubled in a year

Mobile data traffic has more than doubled in one year, Ericsson found. According to a GigaOM report, the doubling came between the second quarter of 2010 and the same quarter in 2011. Ericsson found than an active smartphone owner uses more than 1MB per day.

Ericsson also concluded that the quality of smartphones and the apps they are capable of of supporting have a big influence on how much data is consumed. The screen size, age and price are more relevant to the data usage than the type of operating system they run on, it dscovered. North Americans with high-end smartphones consumed twice the data than users with comparable hardware in Asia and Europe.

Also, the top five to 10 percent of heavy users watched much more video than average users, spending up to 40 minutes a day on the activity. This compares to the average user's 30 seconds per day of video.

Estimates put the cost of mobile data delivery to grow to $370 billion by 2016. Carriers are looking into compression technologies, overage fees and other ways to help manage this growth in traffic. Jumping to 4G also helps as the technology tosses many legacy cellular technologies htat make it expensive to maintain.
