Amazon Locker package delivery system expands to NYC

Amazon Locker gets eight new locations in NYC

Amazon has now launched its Amazon Locker package delivery system in New York Ciry, following a successful test in Seattle. Basically, it's a large lockable metal locker system that lets buyers pick up their shipped packages in their local neighborhoods. It's an alternative to have products ship to their house, office or apartment. There are eight locations in NYC with another eight in Seattle, according to GeekWire.

The lockers are placed in existing businesses, with Gristedes, Rite-Aid and D'Agostino stores in Manhattan being some of them. Not all Amazon buyers have access to the lockers yet, however. Users can check in their Amazon address book for an option to Search for a Locker Location to add as a shipping destination.

With Amazon Locker, the online retailer offers an alternative to big box stores like Best Buy and Walmart, which both offer in-store pickup of items purchased online.

Amazon is also slowly placing Lockers in the UK, but they don't yet appear to be active. The company has also not yet officially announced the program.

The system works by providing users with a six-digit code delivered by e-mail that is used to open the locker once the package arrives. Shipping charges, if they apply, mimic those of the home delivery option.
