Large Android handset with Beats branding

Less than a week after HTC officially unveiled the Sensation XL, the company allowed Electronista to explore its new handset lineup at a special event for the CTIA expo in San Diego. The XL's hardware is mostly familiar, as the device serves as a big brother to the Sensation XE and an Android adaptation of the Windows Phone 7-based Titan.

With a 4.7-inch display, the Sensation XL is one of the largest Android handsets we've seen. The size makes the phone a great device for reading small text or watching videos, but it is clearly not the most pocketable device. We would have preferred a higher screen resolution, considering the focus on a gigantic display, however the 480x800 panel still provides an incredible presentation for a smartphone.

Aside from the OS, the XL also differentiates itself from its WP7 counterpart by adding Beats audio. We did not try out this feature, though users can expect the included headphones to be much better than the complementary earbuds that come with most phones. The system should also be able to produce robust sound through other high-end earphones.

The Sensation XL is scheduled to arrive in European markets by November. HTC has yet to announce North American launch plans.
