HTC aims to spend cash on more content deals

HTC chief executive Peter Chou believes the Taiwanese company needs to develop more content deals in order to become the best-known smartphone brand. Speaking with the FT [free reg. required], Chou said users need a "holistic experience of hardware, software and content" in order to be successful. HTC already made deals with Saffron for streaming video, OnLive for gaming and a 10 percent stake in KKBox, a Taiwanese online music service.

It also released Beats by Dr. Dre-branded smartphones in the Sensation XL and Sensation XE.

Chou said HTC is open-minded about other and more buyouts. He said the company has a lot of cash on hand and the company is interested in investing in a unique experience. Chou hopes to grow absolute profits instead of margins and average selling prices.

Chou added he didn't plan on purchasing its own operating system and will continue to license Android and Windows Phone from Google and Microsoft, respectively. There is also a plan to launch a new tablet next year.
