'iPad mini' in works to fight Kindle Fire, analyst suggests

Added iPad might be cheaper, not smaller

Research points to a new, cheaper iPad coming in "the first few months" of 2012, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. The claim is based on White's meetings with Apple suppliers while on a visit to China. The device, nicknamed the "iPad mini," would allegedly expand the reach of the iPad by making it accessible to people who can't justify the normal $499 barrier to entry.

The "mini" term is used to refer to price, not necessarily size, White cautions. "We believe this lower priced iPad could be priced in the mid-to-high-$200 range," he says. "We expect this will be followed by a much more powerful, feature rich standard-priced iPad 3 in 2Q12."

Casting doubt on the claim is Apple's tendency to avoid releasing two models of the same product separately. White suggests however that Apple may want to counter Amazon's Kindle Fire, which while just an 8GB, 7-inch tablet is also only $199. Apple could conceivably follow the strategy it has adopted with iPhones by introducing a low-storage iPad 2 alongside an iPad 3.

    Research Has Shown....???

Sounds like Richard Dawson. What research? How credible is this guy's "guess record?"

You can bet that virtually every analyst who tries to outguess Apple has been wrong and will continue to be wrong (then later they fall all over themselves correcting THEIR spin). I suppose if enough stuff is thrown at a barn wall some will stick... but it seems to me that Apple's founder and team always have IDEAS these dudes never consider. Will or won't it cannibalize? Will keeping the same price point keep sales going? Are there compelling features a new model must have? Will people go to their credit card once again? It's not that simple Mr. White (Reservoir Dogs). We aren't either.

Apple will release a smaller/cheaper iPad but, frankly, I doubt it.

If they do it will be because they think there is a good market for it and that there are a some benefits to a smaller form. But it will definitely NOT be in response to any new Kindle.

First off, the Kindle Fire may steal sales from some other Android-based tablets but not from the iPad. Secondly, the iPad is still selling like crazy. You only react like that to another product if you think you're going to lose to it...not happening!

Analysts get paid to make up goofiness! "making it accessible to people who can't justify the normal $499 barrier to entry." If (people) can't justify the price, go buy a cheap iPad knockoff android device, get upset because it's not an iPad, return it to the store and break the piggy bank so that (people) can get what they really wanted all along.

    Apple pricing

Apple pricing for their product are carefully choose. Right now they have the 49$ Shuffles, 129$ Nano, 199$ iPod Touch and 249$ ipod classic model. They can not bring an 10 inch screen at iPod touch price right without cannibalizing iPod market. Beside, Apple is already more than happy with current iPad 2 sales, they don't need to lower price for the iPad to sold out all his production.

    Analyst is clueless

Apple does not react to other companies' products. They have 2-4 years of strict design and planning into their product roll-outs. Not just hardware, but the software that the products run.

I guarantee that Siri is the reason the iPhone 4S was not released in June. Jobs wanted it to be the killer feature. It probably is the reason the iPhone 4S will stay at number one. I cna't wait until it is released for the iPad 2 or 3.

    Search Brian White

A quick search of Electronista for "Brian White" gives quite a clear picture of how consistently wrong both he and his "sources" prove to be. I'm amazed that Ticonderoga still hire this guy, no wait... as far as I can tell Mr. White is Ticonderoga Securities. What a knucklehead.

Siri is the hidden weapon that is not yet available to iPad. Once it does, the other products will become *EVEN MORE* undesirable.

    Not going to happen

An 'iPad Mini' would result in a sub-par experience if it was underpowered. A smaller screen would mean fragmentation (again).
It's an old rumor that's been going around ever since the first iPad came out. Just give it up already!

    You forget...

Airplay. Use an iPod touch and airplay and beam your pictures and video to the screen. Mini iPad big screen, fits in pocket..

    Just a thought,
