CyanogenMod 7.1 adds Samsung Galaxy S II, more

updated 04:30 pm EDT, Tue October 11, 2011

Support for HP TouchPads available soon

CyanogenMod, the collective that provides aftermarket firmware for phones and tablets running Android, has released a new update of its app (free, CyanogenMod mirror network). The ROM, which builds upon Android 2.3, offers support for almost 70 devices, and reportedly has over 50 improvements over the old release. CyanogenMod is also reaffirming that a release that supports HP TouchPads will be available in the near future.

New features in the release include enhanced Bluetooth support for mice and tethering, app launching gestures, new lock screen widgets, a rewritten LED notification system, and a new screenshot function.

New devices supported by the ROM include the Samsung Galaxy S and S II, the HTC Desire S and Incredible S (Droid Incredible 2), the T-Mobile G2X from LG, Motorola's Cliq, Droid and Defy, and all of Sony Ericsson's Xperia phones. The CyanogenMod initiative got a big boost last month when Sony Ericsson threw its support and technical assistance behind the community-built software effort.

The ROM for the HP TouchPad, which was revealed last month is currently in beta. It's expected that the code will be promoted to a release or release candidate within the next few weeks.
