3LM launches, promises tough Android security for work

App preloaded by phone makers, then activated

3LM, a small start up that Motorola Mobility acquired in February, brought out its enhanced security and device management targeting an enterprise's Android phones and tablets. The software isn't just a superficial add-on and works on the OS level, being preloaded onto the device during the production process. A company, after purchasing the phones, can then activate them through an enterprise server console.

A key feature of the software is device security. An enabled phone or tablet encrypts the data on all memory, including removable SD cards, as well as selectively protecting corporate apps. The app enforces a whitelist/blacklist of apps and controls their access to corporate resources. Using the software, data on the device can be erased remotely, either completely or selectively.

The app also offers optimized device management. With it, enterprise apps can be remotely installed or removed. It also provides location and breadcrumb tracking. Secure remote VPN access allows secure remote access to internal corporate networks. It also uses the device's IP address to track the device as thought it were a regular part of the corporate network.

3LM has worked with phone and tablet manufacturers, including HTC, Sony Ericsson, Sharp and Pantech to pre-install the app. Trials of the app began earlier this year in government, healthcare, retail, and education. The 3LM code will be generally available later this month.
