Verizon drops Droid Charge to $200 ahead of Galaxy Nexus

Verizon cleaning out stocks before Nexus' arrival

Verizon has dropped the price of the Samsung Droid Charge to $200 with contract. The drop is probably an attempt to clear out inventory in anticipation of the launch of its new flagship Android phone, the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus will be Verizon's first phone to offer the latest Android release, Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).

The Droid Charge was officially launched last April. Technical problems delayed first shipments until May. The Android 2.2-based smartphone came with 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, a rear-facing eight-megapixel camera and a front 1.3-megapixel camera. It was powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. Built-in was a hotspot feature with support for sharing with up to 10 other devices.

It's believed that the Galaxy Nexus, also known as the Nexus Prime, will incorporate a 4.65-inch, curved 720p Super AMOLED screen, a five-megapixel rear camera, and a camera with at least 1.3 megapixels in the front. The processor probably will be a dual-core 1.2GHz TI OMAP chip.

It was originally believed that the Nexus would be launched this week during the CTIA fall conference, just ahead of Friday's initial shipments of Apple's new iPod 4s. The Nexus is seen as a potential strong competitor to the newest Apple phone. However, late last week, Samsung and Google announced they were postponing the launch of the Nexus out of respect to Steve Jobs. via Droid-Life]
