iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS sales doing well despite 4S launch

Price cuts, iOS 5 support help keep devices alive

Sales of the iPhone 4 and 3GS are still doing well, even with the impending of launch of the iPhone 4S later this week, says Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. Although non-specific, the claim is said to stem from checks with US cellphone carriers. Walkely adds that preorders of the iPhone 4S appear to be doing well, something Apple itself has validated by announcing that over 1 million preorders were made in the space of a day. By comparison, just 600,000 iPhone 4s were preordered in a similar timeframe last year.

The persistence of the iPhone 4 and 3GS is likely attributable in large part to price cuts, since an 8GB iPhone 4 is now available for $99. Remaining 16GB and 32GB units are $150 and $200 through AT&T or Verizon. The 8GB iPhone 3GS is free, though only on AT&T in the US, since a CDMA version of the phone was never produced.

Apple has also ensured that both the 4 and the 3GS will be able to run iOS 5, which launches on Wednesday. Neither, however, will apparently support Siri, a voice command technology so far only confirmed for the iPhone 4S. There is even no word on whether it might carry over to the iPad 2, which is likewise equipped with an A5 processor.

    "...appear to be doing well..."

1,000,000 in 24 hours is not 'appear to be doing well'. It's a frigging all-time record.

Um, they're talking about sales of the iPhone 4 and 3Gs, not the 4s. What they're saying is, well, people are still buying the 4 and 3gs, despite the release of the 4s.

But I'm sure we won't here how Apple is propping up sales of some models by giving them away or selling them cheap, like if it were a Blackberry or Android sale.

    Competitors' worst nightmare

    Well, it's happened. Apple now sells iPhones at $0, $100, $200, $300, and $400.
Good luck to everyone else. You're going to need it.

Bought the 4S and have to wait

My AT&T orders states three weeks. I already sold my other phone for a hefty profit. I have actually considered cancelling the purchase and just getting another iPhone 4 versus waiting. I really don't care about the extra features, I just wanted the faster speed and more memory (which seems to still be at 512MB). :(
