Pixel Qi, Shizhu working on four tablets

At the currently ongoing Gitex show in Dubai, Pixel Qi, maker of low-power, outdoor readable electronic displays, unveiled a partnership with China's Shanghai Shizhu Technology. The terms call for a four-tablet contract to be sold in China and acting as e-book readers. The tablets should be revealed at the show.

Shizhu is closely tied to one of China's major publishing and media groups, Southern Media Group, whose paper publications have a daily reach of millions. This would allow the company to bring a wide variety of content to the readers.

While the technical details of the resulting tablets aren't being released, they will offer screen sizes between seven and 10.1 inches, with pixel densities of as much as 170 pixels per inch. The displays allow full-color images and full-motion video even in bright, outdoor environments. There is a reflective mode that uses the incoming, ambient light and thus allows the backlight to be turned down or off altogether. This helps the displays achieve their high levels of efficiency.
