More light sheds on Samsung 2012 Olympics phone with NFC

updated 06:00 pm EDT, Thu October 6, 2011

Will offer special phone with NFC for London event

It has been confirmed that Samsung will follow the tradition it started with the 2008 Beijing Olympics and offer a special edition phone to commemorate the upcoming 2012 games in London. The confirmation came, not from Samsung, but from Visa, an official sponsor and sole credit card processor for the London event. Visa is trying to make the games a "contactless" experience for its attendees.

A special phone for the Olympics was not unexpected. In April, Samsung and Visa announced a partnership to deliver NFC mobile phone payments for the event. At the time, the two companies said they would provide a special Olympic and Paralympic games handset for sponsored athletes to take advantage of Visa's contactless payment system. The phone will carry a Visa-enabled SIM card to work with the 60,000 location payment system that have already been deployed throughout London.

Other than it will be NFC enabled and that it will come with special Olympic-specific content preloaded, little is known about the special handset. Samsung will make the phone available on a worldwide basis sometime during the first quarter of 2012. [via Pocket-lint]
