Amazon lets users pay $30 to remove ads from new Kindles

updated 10:55 am EDT, Thu October 6, 2011

New Kindle owners can pay $30 to remove ads

The newly introduced, ad-supported Kindles can get their ads removed, though Amazon will charge users $30 for the privilege, a user on the MobileRead forums found. The company allows owners of the Special Offers Kindle to log into their Manage Your Kindle page and unsubscribe from the ads. This costs the difference in the retail prices of the subsidized and unsubsidized devices, which is $30.

This option eliminates the need for owners to return or exchange the Kindle if they find the ads unbearable. Ads come in the form of a skinny banner ad at the bottom and screensavers when the Kindle is unused long enough to go to sleep mode. They provide discounts on specific books, two-for-one deals, and in some cases local offers. [via TheDigitalReader]
