Myriad's Alien Dalvik 2.0 puts Android apps on iPads

Myriad Alien Dalvik 2 to show next week

Myriad on Thursday showed off a second generation of its Alien Dalvik platform. A 2.0 remake will bring Android's Dalvik engine to outside tablet platforms, including the iPad. E-readers, in-car systems, and TVs should also support it for the first time.

As before, Alien Dalvik takes the regular APK installers and repackages them without having to make direct code changes. The apps site inside a container and are mostly limited through the absence of OS-level Android features like background notifications.

The implementation doesn't have a set release date. It should be shown off next week at the CTIA fall show.

Alien Dalvik is intended as a way of simplifying cross-platform app development and could let developers start on Android but get to iOS and other platforms without having to recompile or adjust the interface.

    Kind of scary.

    Time to patch any leaks in the iOS app sandbox routines. We don't want anything with the Dalvix malware, viruses and other trash to infect our devices.

    have to be jailbroken

    unless the App Store rules change, this is a just in time compiler which isn't allowed. So it would only be possible to run on Jailbroken iOS devices.
