Apple reveals Find My Friends, iOS 5 coming on October 12th

updated 01:55 pm EDT, Tue October 4, 2011

All recent devices supported

Presenting at its special iPhone event, Apple has announced that iOS 5 will go public on October 12th. All of Apple's recent iOS devices will be supported, including first- and second-generation iPads, the iPhone 4 and 3GS, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touches. The firmware introduces a host of features, such as Twitter integration, the BBM-like iMessage, Newsstand, and an overhauled notification system.

Apple has also taken the wraps off of Find My Friends, a new app that lets people locate peers who've allowed their locations to become visible. Invites can be sent asking for temporary permission to see a friend's location, restoring privacy once the time limit is up. Parental controls are designed to prevent the stalking of children.

    Think outside your basement Testudo

We are heading to Disney World with our immediate family of five, my parents and my wife's parent and a brother and sister in law in November. We all have iOS devices and this feature will be priceless on this trip!

Testudo, instead of being a first-class tool all the time, try imagining that others may have real world uses for some technology.

    opt in?

Sounds like it's opt in anyway. If you don't want friends (or others) to find you, don't turn it on. Simple as that.

    Siri question

Anybody know... Is Siri part of IOS 5? Will it work on the iPad 2, or will it be limited to the iPhone 4S?
