Lost iPhone prototype surveillance footage scrubbed

updated 07:45 pm EDT, Mon October 3, 2011

Lost iPhone prototype surveillance video gone

The mystery surrounding the latest lost iPhone prototype has taken another twist with the surveillance footage of the night it went missing now inadvertently erased. According to CNET, the surveillance video, which could have helped shed light on the events of that late August night, has been routinely erased after its hard drive reached its capacity. Worse, the footage was erased before police could review it.

The owner of Cava 22, a tequila bar, Jose Valle had previously stated that he had the video of the night in question. He had even offered to let the media review the footage, but for a fee. Valle said that police investigators had come to Cava 22 to review the footage, but that he was not at the bar at the time. He had contacted them, but SFPD had not yet returned.

In the meantime, any opportunity to reveal what had happened has now passed. Valle had always maintained that when the drive fills, its contents are automatically wiped. This is what has now occurred, he confirmed with CNET.

The SFPD had indicated that it wanted to use the surveillance footage as part of its investigation into the matter. Why the department did not return to view the footage before it was wiped is not known at this time.
