Kik ready to launch updated app for BlackBerry

updated 07:20 pm EDT, Thu September 29, 2011

Preview app already ready for download

Kik has quietly released a preview version of its cross-platform messaging app for BlackBerry devices. The company posted a link on its website, enabling visitors to download a "sneak peek" ahead of the formal release. The update brings a redesigned interface, with support for push notifications and BlackBerry 7 handsets. A new security prompt also asks users before the app takes information from the address book.

Earlier versions of Kik proved controversial after RIM pulled the titles from the App World and sued the startup for patent infringement. Reasons for pulling the apps and disabling push support remain unclear, though it was believed to have been due in part to the lack of security prompts.

Kik founder and CEO Ted Livingston has yet to comment on the ongoing lawsuit, however the executive told Reuters the new version takes advantage of Java coding to expand its presence onto feature phones and other devices.

"None of it is unique to BlackBerry so we don't see what the possible problem could be," said Livingston.

The official update has yet to be submitted to RIM for approval, leaving its fate uncertain. [via CrackBerry]
