Amazon Kindle and Touch hit prices with ads

Amazon in a follow-up to its Kindle overhaul revealed that its e-paper reader prices came with certain conditions. The $99 Kindle Touch and the $79 Kindle both reach their prices through the use of ads, similar to the existing Kindles with Special Offers. Ad-free versions of the new generation cost $139 for the Touch and $109 for the regular version.

The third-generation models are also staying at least temporarily, Amazon said. Now relabeled as the Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Keyboard 3G, the two are identical to the ad-sponsored versions and just sell at slightly lower prices.

At the event unveiling the Kindle Fire, meanwhile, Kindle VP Russ Grandinetti hinted in a chat with Engadget at the upcoming larger Fire tablet for early next year. He would only say to "stay tuned" but, with a smile, made clear one was coming.

Most expect the larger Fire to be a 10-inch device with a quad-core processor, which might be a TI OMAP design given the dual-core OMAP in the seven-inch slate. Amazon supposedly considers it the real highlight of its lineup and a competitor to the iPad where the current Fire is just a stopgap to have a tablet on the market for the holidays.
