Chitika September data sees Mac dent Windows

Sustained demand for Mac OS X Lion has helped the Mac pass 10 percent for real usage share, Chitika has found. The Mac grew by just over a point to hit 10.6 percent in current September figures. Windows was the primary victim, dropping 0.6 percent but now sitting at 77.7 percent.

iOS also took a dip of 0.3 percent, although it's unknown whether these were Mac users turn attention back to their computers or a general slide. Android was virtually flat, while Linux moved up slightly by a tenth of a point.

The data isn't a reflection of market share, which shows what customers are buying, but does reflect an overall downward Windows trend, primarily in Mac-friendly areas like North America. Chitika believed that Windows 8 could revive Microsoft's interest, but wit ha launch not due until mid-2012 at the earliest, Microsoft was vulnerable to losing more share.

Android and iOS could also see substantial jumps after a wave of new Android phones and the iPhone 5 hit the market, researchers added.
