Motorola Spyder to pack qHD AMOLED, Atrix 2 gets press shots

Motorola Spyder and Atrix 2 get more details

Two of Motorola's most important smartphones for the near future have been spotted in individual leaks. The most unique identified by This is my next, the Spyder or Droid RAZR, could have a slew of firsts. The Verizon-bound phone could be first ever device with a qHD (540x960) Super AMOLED screen and back up its Gorilla Glass front with a Kevlar body and splash-resistant coating, toughening up the entire frame for real-world use.

Its most conspicuous upgrade would be a new dual-core 1.2GHz processor, possibly a TI OMAP chip. Other features would be much like those on the Droid Bionic, including the 1GB of RAM, eight-megapixel back camera, 1080p video capture, and support for a proprietary version of the Lapdock. An "HD" front camera would be an upgrade from earlier Motorola smartphones but just on par with competition from HTC and Samsung.

The Atrix 2 has already been detailed but has now been seen in press shots for the first time that fill out details. It will use an LCD in place of the AMOLED screen, but it should otherwise be a close match for the Spyder, just tailored to AT&T. The new version is now expected to stop at HSPA+ for Internet access but to still claim the 4G title. Only 8GB of storage will be built-in, although it will have a microSDHC slot and come with a 2GB card from the start.

Its most standout feature will be a genuinely new Lapdock, the 100. Along with a switch to a silver design, it would use a smaller 10.1-inch screen (down from 11.6 inches) and possibly avoid the direct docking choice that has forced Motorola to make a proprietary version of the Lapdock for each phone that supports it. Instead, the cradle would merely be to hold the phone while a cable reaches up to plug in.

Motorola's timetable for releasing either device isn't apparent. A dual-core chip on each suggests the two are more likely to show up late this year than next, although Motorola this year queued up multiple phones at CES in January and shipped them across the rest of the year.
