Facebook Timeline hits desktop, mobile

Facebook Timeline arrives at f8

Facebook at its f8 conference showed off a completely redesigned profile page. Now called a Timeline, it follows a chronology that focuses most on recent events but can go back months and years, ranging as far back as birth. Older dates become a synthesis of larger events that users can add to, promote as 'major,' or hide them away.

Apps get boxes that can float their activity to the top, but they can also be condensed into "reports," which summarize activity more smoothly than just showing every update. A 'cover' image above the profile can set a style independently of the profile photo.

The page is optimized from the start for mobile and displays a reflowed page on modern device like iPhones and Android smartphones.

The changes take effect immediately in a beta form, with developers getting guaranteed access and the public eligible for sign-ups. A gradual rollout should finish in the next two months.
