Clearwire to sell network capacity to Verizon, AT&T?

updated 10:10 pm EDT, Thu September 22, 2011

Carriers said to be in talks over 4G spectrum

Clearwire is reportedly involved in ongoing negotiations to sell some of its network capacity to other major carriers in the US. CEO Eric Prusch told Reuters the company is "talking to everybody," a list that includes AT&T and Verizon, along with smaller regional carriers such as Leap Wireless and MetroPCS.

Although Sprint has a majority stake in Clearwire, the latter company still needs to raise $900 million in new funding. Network upgrades are said to require approximately $600 million, while an additional $300 million is needed for business operations.

Recent reports suggest Sprint may be considering buying the rest of Clearwire's shares for a full acquisition. Clearwire spokeswoman Susan Johnson suggests the company is considering a variety of angles and would prefer a multi-faceted solution rather than a single funding option.
