QNX revealed as power driving OnStar access mirror

updated 08:20 pm EDT, Thu September 22, 2011

Apps also power RIM BlackBerry Playbook

RIM's real-time OS developer QNX has revealed that its Neutrino real-time OS and Aviage audio processing have been embedded in Onstar's new FMV rear-view mirror which the GM division launched in August. Onstar is using the aftermarket mirror to provide access for non-GM car owners to its driver's services. The QNX code is used to tune the system performance and hands-free calling.

The mirror's OS can provide an automated response to a crash, turn-by-turn driving instructions, and voice commands for calls.

In addition to the OnStar mirror, the QNX apps are used elsewhere in cars, such as hands-free systems, digital instrument clusters, multimedia head end units, 3D navigation systems, and other "infotainment" products.

BlackBerry maker RIM acquired QNX from Harman International, the maker of JVC and Harman Kardon audio products in April 2010. RIM took QNX's technology and made it the underlying software behind the company's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, in part because it's very efficient and can juggle many apps at once.
