Vimeo to start up music licensing store for video makers

updated 04:55 pm EDT, Wed September 21, 2011

Vimeo teams with Audiosocket on music store

The home-made video music sharing service, Vimeo, will begin offering music through its Vimeo Music Store. Unlike iTunes or other music stores, however, the music store will allow licensing songs for non-commercial and limited commercial use. The service will be powered by Audiosocket's Music-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform.

As a part of the deal, users will get access to Audiosocket's more than 33,000 songs that can be used as soundtracks for videos. Audiosocket, in the meantime, benefits from the deal by giving its users a new way of distribution and royalty payments on licensed music.

The deal will allow independent musicians to make extra money while getting credit for their work.

Vimeo users will need to pay for Audiosocket's music content, at $2 per track for personal, non-commercial web use and $98 per track for commercial web use. Much of the content is available for free, however. [via TechCrunch]
