AT&T ships Galaxy S II October 2, days before iPhone 5

Samsung Galaxy S II dated, priced for ATT

AT&T on Wedndesday morning set out launch details for its Galaxy S II variant that could see it overshadowed by Apple. The Samsung phone we reviewed will ship on October 2 for $200 on a two-year contract. Its version is the closest to the international model of all the US carriers and mostly just swaps out the deliberately iPhone-like home button in favor of Android's usual four-button navigation keys.

With the exception of the T-Mobile version, every Galaxy S II has a 480x800 Super AMOLED Plus screen, a dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor, an eight-megapixel rear camera, and a two-megapixel front camera. International and AT&T models have a 4.3-inch display.

The timing could possibly overwhelm the Galaxy S II. Apple is now expected to unveil the iPhone 5 on October 4 and immediately shift attention back to itself. Rumors have also persisted that Apple plans a very quick turnaround and could have the new iPhone in US stores Friday that same week, guaranteeing that it's strictly secondary.

AT&T has always counted the iPhone as its most popular smartphone platform and still credits Apple for 60 percent of its smartphone sales. As such, it's more likely to devote attention to the iPhone 5 release than an Android device that, while very well received, won't trigger the same lineups and publicity.

Apple may easily bump it up before Samsung

    We'll see.
