iPad 2 3G on sale in China, still no China Unicom plans

updated 03:05 pm EDT, Wed September 21, 2011

Prices start at equivalent of $735

As planned, 3G models of the iPad 2 are now available in mainland China. By extension Apple has revealed prices at its online store; a 16GB tablet is 4,688 RMB, about $735 US, while 32 and 64GB options are 5,488 RMB ($860) and 6,288 RMB ($985), respectively. In the US 3G iPads are substantially cheaper, sitting between $629 and $829, even though the products are built in China.

Still unmentioned on the web are any formal iPad plans from China Unicom. The company is so far Apple's only official Chinese carrier partner, having won deals for the iPhone 4 and 3GS. More local carriers are expected beginning with the iPhone 5, namely China Telecom.
