Kindle e-book library lending now official

The Kindle library book lending has now gone live, with Amazon now making the official announcment. Those with Kindle readers or Kindle apps can borrow e-books from more than 11,000 local libraries throughout the US. The system fully supports the Whispersync feature that will synchronize margin notes, highlights and bookmarks on its own, as well as assign real page number and integrate with Facebook and Twitter, among others.

The system will let users select books to check out from their local participating library's website thanks to a Send to Kindle button. They will then need to log into their Amazon account, and the e-book will be sent to the Kindle over Wi-Fi or USB.

All Kindle generations are supported, as are the free Kindle apps for iOS, Android, PC, Mac, BlackBerry or Windows Phone devices or their web browser.
Users can also view Popular Highlights and Public Notes from the Kindle community in particular books.

I don't quite like the idea of my taxpayer money going to proprietary locked-in solutions.

My local library subscribed to Live-brary which supports a bunch of ebook readers. Still somewhat proprietary though.

While I do agree that this is propriatary to the Kindle, I applaud them for being out in front with this just as Apple was with the iPOD/Phone/Pad. This is excellent and yes, it does Lock them into a solid e-reader place. Very smart, very good. Actually could/should have been done a year or two ago, then the other e-readers would have been toast. Still... very good idea
