HP board may fire CEO after his trying to kill mobile, PCs

updated 12:35 pm EDT, Wed September 21, 2011

HP board may vote to fire Apotheker early

HP's board of directors is near holding a meeting that could fire its CEO Leo Apotheker less than a year into his stint, a pair of sources said Wednesday. The group is said by Bloomberg to be unhappy both with nine months of consecutive forecast drops and plans to drop mobile hardware and PCs. Under one proposal, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman would take over, at least temporarily.

The company hasn't commented on the rumors.

Apotheker made the decision to drop HP's webOS hardware and unveil intentions to either spin out or sell home computers with the claim that tablets, more specifically the iPad, were making both businesses unprofitable. Investors and other critics, however, have said that both decisions were premature. The TouchPad was on shelves just six weeks before it was dropped yet saw runaway demand when priced at $100 on a fire sale. By announcing plans to back away from PCs a full 12 to 18 months before it might happen, it may also have torpedoed the business by leading some buyers to doubt whether HP would be committed to its systems in the long run.

Between exiting the devices and making a $10 billion deal to buy the UK's Autonomy, many have seen Apotheker simply trying to recreate his former employer, SAP, at HP. Enterprise services are more profitable, but many have pointed out that HP is synonymous with home PCs and would be tossing out much of its public identity.

HP = Comedy of Errors = Titanic?

Seems like they made a commitment to go after SAP's market. They bought that huge software company in the UK, and now they want to get rid of the guy who had the plan to transform HP into something else?

Look, I may not like the direction they were going, or that the decisions were correct, or the way they made their announcements, but I will tell you the ship's going to hit the iceberg soon because they can't decide which way to turn.

    Are they insane?

Are HP completely insane? Hiring that 24ct vajayjay Whitman would result in only one thing... massive redundancies to create the illusion of a short-term turnaround to leave (in the longer term) a burnt out shell of a company. Danger Will Robinson, danger!

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy

Having worked for HP thorugh a 3rd party marketing company, the HP Board's decisions along with the sucession of CEO's from Carly on has been a disaster. They ahve totally given up or are ignoring waht differentiated HP and their legacy. Leo "Apathetic"'s attempt to recreate his own SAP deserves to be slapped down for the company's own good, IMHO. Most of the board also deserves to be fired for supporting this and destroying HP in the process.

    HP Board

I think next to the Yahoo Board, they've got the dumbest board on the planet. They've had a string of failures at the top .... and it all started with Carly. I think Mark Hurd was the best one in recent history, but they canned him because of stupid scandal - just pure retarded. I think they should definitely can Leo; I don't think he has any vision for a company as big as HP. Here is my guess: they're gonna bring on Carol Bartz :-))) LOL .... they figure she did so much for Yahoo, she can totally revitalize HP :-))
