Client expands beyond mobile
Splashtop has released the first edition of Remote Desktop for Mac. The software was previously aimed mostly at iOS and Android users, although a Windows client is also available. Like its Windows counterpart, the Mac app allows users to remotely access and control another computer, whether it's running Windows or OS X.
The client is capable of running many Windows apps including games. Both audio and video can be streamed, although HD video is restricted to 30 frames per second. Some other features include automatic detection of local computers, wake-on-LAN support, and the use of Gmail logins to access more distant machines.
The Mac software currently costs $10, but after launch week the price will jump to $20. As with all versions of Remote Desktop, target computers must be running a free copy of Splashtop Streamer, which requires OS X 10.6 or better in the case of Macs, or Windows 7, XP or Vista on PCs. Splashtop also "strongly" recommends that systems with Streamer be using a dual-core CPU.
