Microsoft works to mitigate confusion over Mango app updates

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Tue September 20, 2011

Updates to v7 apps to be supported in October

Ahead of the full Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango' rollout, Microsoft is still encouraging developers to submit apps for the latest version of the mobile platform. In a blog post, Microsoft's senior director of the Windows Phone Marketplace, Todd Brix, admits that some developers have already complained about potential problems with the upgrade, which require separate app releases for the v7.0 and v7.5 editions.

Some developers appear to be waiting to release a v7.5 update for their apps, as such a move effectively blocks them from making further updates to the current v7.0 release. Brix suggests that Microsoft has come up with a solution to the problem, enabling updates to both v7.0 and v7.5 apps, but it will not be available until the end of October.

"Knowing that on average people update their apps every three to four months, this October timeframe provides assurance that you that you can submit 7.5 apps today and still have access to your 7.0 app well before the next update is required," Brix said. "There's no need to wait!"

To help avoid confusion from the customer end, the company has released screenshot text overlays to differentiate features and capabilities that are limited to the v7.5 releases. [via Winrumors]
