Instagram 2 hits iPhones

Instagram took on many of its biggest requests at once with a new 2.0 version of its app for the iPhone (App Store). The new version has a much more powerful imaging engine and at last captures higher resolution shots, which jump from the original 612x612 to either 1536x1536 on an iPhone 3GS or 1936x1936 on the iPhone 4, ten times larger than before. A new camera interface also now allows for live filters to get a preview of the effect before the shot goes through.

After the shot, users can also get much faster tilt-shift effects and tap once to rotate photos that aren't set properly. Four new filters (Amaro, Hudson, Rise, and Valencia) are available, but photographers now have an option like Android's Picplz to remove the border on any effect.

The new app has stricter requirements and needs at least iOS 4.2.1 to work. Any device that will run the newer firmware, including third-generation or later iPod touch players and all iPads, can use the newer app. Instagram hasn't yet optimized the interface for the iPad's larger screen.
