Foursquare hits billion check-ins, puts lists in mobile app

Foursquare reaches milestone with new app feature

Foursquare marked its billionth check-in last week by launching a new version of its mobile apps. Version 3.5 of the Android (Market), BlackBerry (App World), and iOS (App Store) releases now or will soon have the lists feature once only available on the web. Along with the to-do list, it includes any custom-created list, such as favorite coffee shops or sushi places.

Geolocation works into the release and lets visitors see nearby lists as well as the closest points in the user's own lists. Lists can be extended on the spot with check-in areas as they come up.

A billion check-ins comes two years after Foursquare was founded and cements its position as the top location service of its kind. It has successfully fended off Gowalla and is still well out in front of Facebook Places, which hasn't caught on enough to threaten Foursquare in spite of Facebook's stature. Google also has check-ins in Latitude but considers it a secondary feature.
