Apple releases new ProApps, Thunderbolt updates

updated 12:40 pm EDT, Tue September 20, 2011

Firmware fixes Thunderbolt Display stability

Apple has posted a trio of new software updates, the most important of which are Thunderbolt-related. The Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update fixes unspecified stability problems with Apple's latest product, and apart from the monitor requires a Mac running either OS X 10.6.8 or 10.7.1. A new Thunderbolt Software Update for Snow Leopard is required to use the Thunderbolt Display with the OS, and also fixes compatibility issues with other Thunderbolt devices. A matching Lion update was released late last week.

For video editors Apple has meanwhile produced updated ProApps QuickTime codecs. These include new or upgraded support for formats like ProRes, the Apple Intermediate Codec, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM HD/EX/HD422, MPEG IMX and Uncompressed 4:2:2. The release is specifically aimed at users of Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4.

    Caution advised...

The EFI firmware 2.2 reduced MBP fan load & today the Thunderbolt Update 1.0 (snow) ramped it back to worse than before.

If the MacOS had a Windows-like 'restore' I could undo it, but am now facing a complete OS reinstall to correct the situation.

    The pro graphics issues continue...

    fyi

bobo, I recently bought a MBP 15 that ran extremely hot had a continuously running fan-even with no programs running. The Apple Genius somehow reset the power supply and it took care of the problem; runs very cool and the fan rarely comes on. I ran this update yesterday and everything seems to be in good order.
