Comcast begins offering $10 Internet plan in DC

When Comcast bought NBC Universal, it volunteered to offer $10-per-month broadband to any household that makes less than $24,000 per year for three years. The offer has just been launched in the Ballou High School in the District of Columbia, where FCC chairman Julius Genachowski was present. The Internet Essential Program includes 1.5Mbps download speeds and 384kbps upload speeds.

The program will be offered in 4,000 school districts in 39 states and the District of Columbia this school year. Also part of it during the initial enrollment is the purchase of a $150 computer and free Internet training. According to its estimates, Comcast believes between 1.5 and two million families are eligible.

A few loopholes exist however. For one, applicants must qualify for the National School Lunch Program, can't owe the provider money or equipment and can't have Comcast service presently or within the last 90 days. [via DSLReports]
