Nikon V1, J1 specs to include 1080p video, more

The upcoming mirrorless cameras from Nikon will indeed get 10.1-megapixel image sensors and the ability to record 1080p video, according to two sites citing the unofficial information. Furthermore, a technical drawing that is said to represent the V1 camera was leaked to PhotographyBay. The cameras will use what is called Nikon's CX format, which sports a 2.7X cropped sensor smaller than Micro Four Thirds.

Other unofficial specs include an ISO range of 100 to 6400, a three-inch LCD, and the inclusion of both phase-difference and contrast autofocus. The V1 is rumored to get a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and an accessory port for an external flash, GPS or other add-on, while the J1 will get a built-in flash. Common is an EXPEED 3 image processor. An F-mount lens adapter will be an option.

It's also believed four lenses will ship at launch, including a 10mm, f2.8 pancake; a 10-30mm, f3.5-5.6 VR standard zoom; a 10-100mm, f4.5-5.6 VR long zoom; and a 30-110mm VR telephoto.

Another source, Nikon Rumors, has more details on the cameras. It has them using TTL metering through the image sensor, with three methods: matrix, center-weighted with a 4.5mm circle, and spot with a 2mm circle on the selected focus area.

HD movies can be reportedly shot in 1920x1080 at 60i or 30p, and 1280x720 at 60p. Slow-motion movies at 640x240 and 400FPS or 320x120 at 1200FPS can be shot as well. A 1072x720, 60p still image movie mode could be its standout feature, and a 1920x1080, 60p "snapshot" mode might also be available.

All are shot in the MOV movie format using H.264 compression. The sole audio format is AAC.

When the cameras reach stores remains to be seen, though they are likely to come before year's end and may be unveiled as soon as this week or next.
