KT launches NFC tech for iPhone ahead of Apple

Korea's KT telecom giant has developed its own NFC-equipped iPhone case, The Korea Herald is reporting. Near Field Communication technology is in the process of being widely adopted in Korea and the company is at the forefront of promoting the technology. While some phone makers have already developed smartphones equipped with an NFC chip, KT moved to integrate the technology for use with iPhones ahead of Apple in response to customer demand.

Although Apple is known have been conducting tests of NFC equipped iPhones, and the technology was rumored to be coming to the iPhone 5, recent reports suggest that NFC technology may not appear until the arrival of an iPhone 6 sometime next year. While Korea and Japan are two countries where NFC technology has taken off, it is not yet in widespread use throughout the globe, although this is slowly changing.

Google is expected to go live with its Google Wallet NFC service in the US today. However, at this point in time, only the Google Nexus S 4G supports the technology, which is also only backed by Mastercard at this stage.
