Amazon Appstore opens to Australia, Canada, Europe, more

Amazon Appstore goes worldwide

Amazon on Monday quietly opened up the Amazon Appstore to international buyers. Many, if not most, countries worldwide can now sign in and pay for apps from the store. Australia, Canada, India, South Africa, Venezuela, and much of Europe have all made mention of the store working.

All regular features currently work, including the free app of the day.

It's not certain if the sudden expansion beyond the US-only store is deliberate or an unintentional slip. With an upcoming Kindle tablet, Amazon may want to open up its store such that everyone who orders the future Android tablet has access to the same free apps. If an Android 2.1 device, though, it may be locked out of many current apps.

Amazon's tablet, while taking the strategy Barnes & Noble's Nook Color uses of using a customized Android front end, will be very different in supporting regular Android apps without hacks. The Kindle slate won't challenge the iPad directly but will be counting on the Appstore to boost the app count at more than 15,000 available titles. [via Digital Reader]
