Samsung Focus S reaches the FCC ahead of October intro

updated 01:05 pm EDT, Sat September 17, 2011

Samsung Focus S cleared by FCC

Samsung gave clues that the Focus S was close to launch on Friday after it passed through an FCC approval. Going under its i937 name, it has the expected AT&T 3G frequencies and matches up with the design that Microsoft itself teased earlier in the year. The wireless-focused test also confirms the existences of 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Outside of some cosmetic changes, the Focus S will be a Windows Phone 7 equivalent of the Galaxy S II and share its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen and eight-megapixel rear camera. The Mango update's chassis requirements will lead to a relative slowdown to a single-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon, and it will use a slightly lower resolution 1.3-megapixel front camera for photos and video chat.

FCC filings usually only give rough clues as to when a phone will ship. The Focus S is believed to be shipping in or very near mid-October and may get its formal unveiling at the CTIA show on October 11.
